Meeting and understanding the French
You have just arrived in France and you are discovering a brand new culture. A new language, new ways of communication, new habits… This new environment may seem complex to understand! Here are some key concepts to immerse yourself more easily.
Symbols of the French Republic
The national flag of France is a tricolor featuring three vertical bands colored blue, white and red. This emblem of the French Republic was born during the French Revolution. White is the King’s color, while blue and red are the traditional colors of Paris. It is flown over every public building.
The French national anthem, "La Marseillaise” was composed in 1792. Originally, it was a revolutionary hymn for battle and freedom. “La Marseillaise” now accompanies most official events.
The national motto “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” (that is in English: "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity") is inherited from the Age of Enlightenment. It was mentioned for the first time during the French Revolution. It is written in the French Constitution of 1958.
